The last time there was a new Star Wars movie was released in December 2019. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker debuted around the world. Since then, Lucasfilm has invested heavily in TV production with series like The Mandalorian , The Book of Boba Fett and Andor . And they also announced and developed some films during this time. But more than three years later, none of those announced projects — including a season of villains film directed by Patty Jenkins and a film trilogy directed by Rian Johnson have seen the light of day.
Earlier this year, Lucasfilm announced three of its more potential Star Wars films: a sequel to The Rise of Skywalker starring Daisy Ridley as Rey, a prequel about the origins of the Jedi, and an Avengers crossover film in the vein of all Disney+ TV series. But… will we ever actually see them? The final years of Star Wars film history were shaped by projects that were officially announced and then informally sent to development hell.

Previously, Lucasfilm had planned December 2025 as the next theatrical release for Star Wars Adventures, although the company never specified which of those three projects would hit theaters first. But those plans have already changed again; Disney rearranged much of its release calendar today, and with it this as-yet-untitled Star Wars movie has been pushed back another six months, from December 2025 to Memorial Day weekend 2026. (Though it’s unofficial, believe most observers that this is being directed by Daisy Ridley in the Rise of Skywalker episode.)
That means we’ll have to wait at least three more years for a new Star Wars movie, on top of the three and a half years that have already passed since The Rise of Skywalker. This is the longest such hiatus between Star Wars films since Disney acquired Lucasfilm and began releasing new films in 2015’s Star Wars films with The Force Awakens.
Interestingly, Disney has also added a second Star Wars project to their 2026 release calendar, which is due out in time for Christmas this year. Two Star Wars movies in six months after six years without movies would be quite a change – if it happens.
